Rocchetta Mattei is the name of a castle-like castle built by the Italian miracle healer Cesare Mattei (1809-1896) in the 19th century in the northern Apennines near Grizzana Morandi in the province of Bologna .

Mattei, man of letters, politician and inventor of "electro homeopathy", laid the foundation stone for his medieval and Moorish-inspired building on November 5, 1850 and lived there from 1859. Crowned heads and celebrities from all over the world consulted here in 1847 by the Pope after a generous Donation of faith healer elevated to count. Even after his death, the unusual castle in the style of romantic historicism remained a center of the healing method represented by Mattei. It did not decline until World War II .

In 1959, the merchant Primo Stefanelli from Vergato bought the building, which had been damaged by German troops in the war, and dedicated it to tourism; after his death (1989) it was closed.

A citizens' initiative founded in 1997 subsequently campaigned for the building that was neglected by the owners and authorities, and a human chain was even formed around the castle. The work of the activists proved to be successful. In 2000, a museum dedicated to Count ( Italian Conte ) Cesare Mattei opened. The foundation of the Sparkasse of Bologna acquired the castle in October 2005. The maintenance of the building was slow. The castle has been open to the public since August 2015.

The films Balsamus (1968) by Pupi Avati and Enrico IV (1984) by Marco Bellocchio were shot in the Rocchetta Mattei .
