Lovran (German: Lauran , Italian: Laurana ) is a climatic health resort and seaside resort about 5 km south of Opatija , Croatia and belongs to the Primorje-Gorski kotar County . The name "Lovran" is derived from the Croatian "lovor" = "laurel". Laurels are abundant in both the Lovran coat of arms and the surrounding vegetation.

history

Lovran has a small, once fortified, medieval town center. The rise of the former fishing village with 3640 inhabitants today only began in the course of the development of Abbazia / Opatija by the Austrian Southern Railway Company at the end of the 19th century. In 1884 the 12 km long beach promenade to Abbazia and Volosko was opened, after 1885 a road to Abbazia was built. Between 1891 and 1893 there was an explosive increase in tourism. In 1905 Lovran was declared a climatic health resort. From 1908 until the 1930s, Lovran was connected to Abbazia and the Matulji train station by an electric tram . The most famous spa guests in Lovran include Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk , Thomas Bernhard and Karl Lueger . In the last few decades Lovran has also developed into a center of summer tourism.

Nature and climate

The area around Lovran is wooded and shows sweet chestnuts and evergreen vegetation. The climate is mild: the average air temperature is 5.8 ° C in January and 23.3 ° C in July; an average of 2230 hours of sunshine is recorded per year. In winter the ridge of the Učka protects Lovran from the cold wind, in summer the breeze from the Učka softens the heat.
