Mountaineering on the Učka

The Učka ([ ˈut͡ʃka ], Italian Monte Maggiore ) is a mountain range in Croatia . It is the largest mountain range on the eastern side of the Istrian peninsula . It is located near the city of Rijeka and above the Opatija River .

Part of the mountain range is protected as the Učka Nature Park . The Vela Draga gorge is located near the entrance to the Učka tunnel on the north side of the mountain .

The highest peak is the Vojak with an altitude of 1401 m. There has been an observation tower there since 1911 . When the weather is good, there is a beautiful view over the Gorski Kotar , the Kvarner Bay , the islands of Cres , Krk and Lošinj , the Velebit massif, the Ćićarija , and the Julian Alps in Slovenia to the Dolomites in Italy . There is also a launch pad for paragliders on the summit .

The shelter for Crown Princess Stephanie (renamed Rifugio Duchessa d'Aosta after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy) was built in 1886 by engineer Carl Perinello, the 2nd director of the Abbazia Section of the ÖTC, on behalf of the Austrian Tourist Club.
