The Gorski kotar (German mountainous country ) is a landscape in northwestern Croatia and borders the Croatian coastal area in the west .

He is a plateau with an average altitude of 700 900  m. i. J. , from which the mountain peaks up to over 1500  m. i. J. climb up. It rises steeply over the Kvarner Bay , while the access from the interior is much gentler and more gradual. Precisely this results in climatic consequences, which can be traced back to the great influence of the relief. With a pronounced mountain climate, there are minus degrees in January (−2 ° C), February (−0.8 ° C) and December (−0.5 ° C) while the annual average temperature is +7.16 ° C. The winters are long, severe and with a snow cover that stays on average 106 days a year. Summers are short, fresh and relatively pleasant. Moisture is abundant, which favors the lush forest cover and causes frequent fog. An average of 2079 mm of precipitation falls here per year (so-called orographic rain caused by the relief).

In terms of landscape, the “green karst ” predominates , i. H. A thin layer of humus remains on the limestone and dolomite rocks , the chemical composition and depth of which mainly corresponds to that of beech, juniper and fir cultures, whereby the soil configuration and the wind direction ensure sufficient moisture and precipitation, so that everything together forms an almost completely green landscape results. The Gorski Kotar has a mountain relief of the convex, outwardly curved type. The concave shapes slow the dynamics of the air masses, while the convex ones accelerate them. The constant air flow here characterizes the state of the atmosphere due to the mixture of continental and maritime air masses.

In Gorski Kotar there is also the ski and recreation area of Bjelolasica , the highest mountain of the same name in this area and the Risnjak National Park .

The largest places in Gorski Kotar are Delnice , Ravna Gora and Vrbovsko .
