Klana is a municipality in western Croatia . It has 1975 inhabitants.
The municipality is located in the Gorski-Kotar Mountains , 18 km north of Rijeka near the Slovenian border. The Reka River has its source near Klana . The place is on the northeastern edge of the historical region of Istria.
The name Klana was first mentioned in a document from 1235.
Croatians have settled the area since the 7th century. In 1040 Heinrich III. the margravate of Istria . Since the 12th century, Klana was owned by the Counts of Castel Duino. In 1374 north-eastern Istria became part of the Habsburg Empire, the western and southern parts of the peninsula were conquered by the Republic of Venice . Since 1400 the lands of Klana were owned by the Lords of Waldsee. Klana was an important trading center throughout the Middle Ages.
In early modern times, the Klana and the entire Habsburg Empire were threatened by the Ottoman Turks who plundered the entire region. On February 2, 1559, the Turks, led by Malkoč-beg, were defeated by Uskok forces at the Battle of Klana. From the 15th century until 1918 power was consolidated under the Habsburgs. (From 1805 to 1815 the area was part of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy and the Illyrian Provinces .)
