Kastav (Italian Castua ) is a small town in Primorje-Gorski kotar County , Croatia .

The number of inhabitants is 10,440 (2011 census). Kastav is located 11 km west of Rijeka at 378 m on the Rijeka – Trieste road.

history

The archaeological findings testify to the presence of the Illyrian tribe of the Japods from the 11th century BC. After that the Romans , Ostrogoths , Greeks and Lombards ruled . The Croatians settled here in the 7th century.

Since the 12th century Kastav has been under the rule of Count Devinski (from Duino ). Kastav has been under the rule of the Lords of Walsee since 1400 , and the legal document Zakon Grada Castua od Letta 1400 , written in Croatian, dates from this period . In 1465 Kastav came under Habsburg rule. In 1630 Kastav came under Jesuit rule, which ended in 1773. In 1700 the first school was founded (first Croatian school in Istria). In 1773 Kastav came under Habsburg rule. In 1863 there was a cholera epidemic in the city. In 1866 during the Illyrian Movement the Čitalnica (the reading house) was founded (the first in Istria). After the First World War, Kastav belonged to the Kingdom of SHS . 1997 Kastav got the status of a municipality.

Attractions

  • Six of the originally nine city towers, which were built between the 10th and 16th centuries, are at least partially preserved and accessible.
  • The City Loggia ( Gradska loža ) was built in 1571 for public events and court hearings, at that time it was the only building outside the city walls. It is the largest loggia in the Kvarner region.
  • The Voltica city ​​gate was built in 1731. The Jesuit coat of arms from 1769 is located above the monumental portal.
  • The first Croatian reading room ( Čitalnica ) in Istria was established here in 1866. He was the center of the popular movement and the struggle for the Croatian language.
  • Church of Sveta Jelena ( Saint Helena ): First with a single nave, it was designed in the Baroque style in the 17th century and expanded with two side aisles. The final resting places of distinguished people and captains from Kastav are in the nave. The free-standing bell tower ( zvonik ) was built in 1724.
  • The Holy Trinity Court Church was built around 1400. The oldest Glagolitic graffiti in the Kastav area, dating from 1438, was discovered in this church . The court church is used as a gallery in summer.
  • Church ruin Crekvina : The Jesuits began a new church in the 17th century, which was never completed. The church ruins now serve as a backdrop for open-air events. Around the ruins of the church in Kastav there is a legend about the inhabitants who had to help build the church without wages. A widow's request to the Jesuits to be freed from it so that they could endeavor to feed their children was answered with blows of the stick. She cursed the building so that God might collapse it - and the church collapsed three times while it was being built. Popularly called Crekvina , it still stands today as a ruin of the Church of the Assumption of Mary.
