Vladimir Nazor (born May 30, 1876 in Postira , Brač Island , † June 19, 1949 in Zagreb ) was a Croatian writer , poet and translator . In old age he was also a partisan and politician .

Life

Nazor was the son of an administrative officer on the Dalmatian island of Brač . He first attended elementary school there and then in 1886 the grammar school in Split , where he passed the Matura in 1894. He studied natural sciences in Graz and one semester in Zagreb. After graduating in 1902, he taught as a trainee lawyer in Split, as a teacher from 1901 to 1903 in Zadar , from 1903 to 1906 in Pazin , from 1906 to 1908 in Kopar , from 1908 to 1918 in Kastav and from 1918 to 1920 in Zagreb. He then retired to Crikvenica as the director of a children's home , interrupted for a short time (1926) in Sušak . He spent his last active years in Zagreb from 1931 to 1933 before retiring. Nazor then continued to live in Zagreb, with the exception of a short stay on his home island Brač. Since 1940 he was a member of the academy. As an elderly man, he joined the partisans of Tito with Ivan Goran Kovačić at the end of 1942 , where he received a leading position. After the Second World War until his death he was chairman of the presidium of the Croatian parliament . Nazor was buried in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb.

Nazor was one of the most prolific Croatian writers. His work includes poems, ballads, epics, short stories, novels and essays. He took much of his material from national history and mythology, legends and sagas. His main work is the extensive novel Pastir Loda ( The Shepherd Loda ), in which he tells the story of his home island Brač, experienced by Loda, a satyr who is one of the last of his family to end up on this island. The story Veli Jože is also known ; it takes place in the area around the inner Istrian town of Motovun , and has the great Jože , a helpful and good-natured giant, as her hero.

Nazor experienced enthusiasm and disappointment time and again in his development. This enabled him to break new ground again and again, most notably his dramatic decision to join the partisans. Both his folk-related topics and his affiliation with the partisans made him one of the most respected authors in Yugoslavia, who is still very much appreciated in today's Croatia. Numerous organizations and streets were named in his honor, monuments were erected and medals and postage stamps were dedicated to him.

Nazor has also translated numerous works of world literature into Croatian, e.g. B. by Dante , Shakespeare , Goethe or Victor Hugo . There are very few translations of his own works into German, namely some short stories and the novel "Der Hirte Loda", all of which appeared in the 1940s.

Afterlife

The Croatian Post issued a postage stamp with the motif of the book Veli Jože in 1997 and a postage stamp in 1999 on the 50th anniversary of the death of Vladimir Nazor.

On the ferry route from Zadar to Brbinj (Dugi Otok) there is a car ferry called Vladimir Nazor.
