Vrbnik ( Italian Verbenico 'Vörbnick' ) is a municipality in the east of the island of Krk , Croatia . The main town, Vrbnik, is located on a rock that drops steeply into the sea. Other settlements belonging to the municipality are Garica, Kampelje and Risika.

history

Vrbnik

The place was already settled in prehistoric and Roman times. Vrbnik was first mentioned in a document in 1100 and received a statute in 1388, a copy of which has been preserved in Glagolitic script . The town became a bulwark of the Krk princes, who left many stone marks in Vrbnik. Due to the use of the Glagolitic script and the Old Church Slavonic language, the cultivation of literature and literature, Vrbnik can be described as the stronghold of the “Glagolism” movement, which organized the Slavic resistance against the clergy controlled by Byzantium and Rome .

Attractions

Churches and chapels from different eras are located in the town center: The chapel Sv. Ivana Kritelja from the early 14th century, the Gothic church from the 15th century, the chapel of Sv. Marije od Uznesnja from 1505, and a few more. In the center of the old town, the silhouette is shaped by the bell tower from the Venetian era. The 150 volumes of Dinko Vitezić Vrbničanin's library include manuscripts from the 14th – 15th centuries. For centuries the “Atlas Scholasticus et Itinerarius” by GD Kochler, which was printed in Nuremberg in 1748 .

Klančić Street

The street Klančić (Eng .: bottleneck ) was with its almost 40 centimeters long as the narrowest street in the world.

beaches

Due to the steeply sloping coast, there are only certain places where you can swim, but they are nicely located and clean.

  • Zgribnica: Lido directly on the northern coastal area of the village, partly pebble beach, partly concrete entry points.
  • Kozica: Small gravel bay, which is about 10 minutes walk through a pine forest from the large parking lot on the southern outskirts.
  • Pod kovač: Very small beach just below the old town, accessible from the port.
  • Potovošće: About three kilometers south of Vrbnik accessible via a small country road, large pebble beach with a kiosk.

Viticulture

The noble grape variety Žlahtina , which forms the basis for the white wine of the same name, which is only produced in this region, is grown in the immediate vicinity of the village .

Above the village there is an approximately 120 hectare wine-growing area in a valley surrounded by hills. Until shortly after the Second World War, this area was a lake that was drained due to food shortages in order to initially grow products (probably fruit, vegetables and cereals) essential for the population's survival. According to local winegrowers, the area has only been used for growing wine since the 1960s or 1970s.

Almost every larger family in the village owns a small portion of the vineyard area and presses wines of very different quality, sometimes for their own use, sometimes for sale to tourists. Only a few larger winemakers in the region produce professional products here. Vrbnik is known for its many wine tasting offers.

The Žlahtina grape produces little sugar in this location, which leads to quite light, acidic wines that go well with the fish dishes that are offered everywhere.
