Omišalj is one of the oldest towns in Krk. It was founded in the 3rd century by the Romans as Fulfinium . It derives its strategic importance from its location on an 80 m high cliff from which one could overlook the Kvarner Bay . The remains of an early Christian basilica date from the time it was founded . In the 12th century Omišalj was called Castri musculi (from Latin ad musculi "with the shells").

The international airport of Rijeka and a tank farm are located in modern Omišalj . The southern continuation of the international oil pipeline friendship ends at the latter . Further transport around the world by oil tanker has not yet been possible due to environmental protests.
