Kostrena is a municipality in Croatia and is located east of Rijeka , on the Kvarner Bay . The municipality on the approximately 10 km long peninsula includes 20 settlements and is a popular tourist destination due to its location between the bays of Martinscica and Bakar . Most of the settlements owe their names to different families. Today the settlements with the most inhabitants are Vrh Martinscica, Glavani, St. Lucia, Rozmanici and Paveki.
Kostrena is an old and well-known coastal town that was first mentioned at the beginning of the 15th century. Kostrena gained its first communal autonomy in 1874 for only two years. The place is divided into two parts, St. Lucia and St. Barbara.
The prehistoric forts Solin and Sopalj are located on the highest hills above Kostrena. The Solin elevation with the remains of the archaeological site is located on the northwestern edge of the city. The excellent position from which a panoramic view of the eastern parts of the city of Rijeka opens up, was already occupied at the end of the Younger Stone Age, with permanent settlement during the Copper Age.
On the eastern edge of the Kostrena municipality, on the dominant stone mountain Sopalj, there is an extensive prehistoric settlement, the Sopalj Fort, delimited by two dam belts. Sopalj was founded during the Bronze Age in the second millennium BC.
The community has a long tradition of seamanship. The most famous and most visited beaches are those in Zurkovo Bay, then Smokvino, Svezanj, Spuzvina, Podrazica, Nova voda and Perilo.
Today a number of associations are active in Kostrena, whose activities are linked to the sea. The best-known clubs, also internationally, are JK Galeb, KPA Kostrena and SRD Kostrena, the oldest club in this field.
