Viktor Car-Emin

Viktor Car-Emin (born November 1, 1870 in Kraj near Lovran , Istria (part of Austria-Hungary), today Croatia; † April 17, 1963 in Opatija , Croatia ) was a Croatian writer .

Life

Viktor Car was the son of a seafarer. After he married Ema Jurković in 1897, he took her first name as the second surname Emin . He attended the Italian elementary school in Lovran and the Hungarian high school in Rijeka before starting a commercial apprenticeship. Finally he graduated from the trilingual teacher training institute in Koper and became a teacher. In addition, he headed the Istrian Kyrill and Method Society and edited the magazines Mladi Istranin and Mladi Hrvat . In 1919 he was a member of the National Assembly for Rijeka and Sušak . From 1921 he lived in Opatija , but was retired by the fascists in 1925 and was considered an undesirable person in Italy, so that in 1929 he emigrated to Sušak in Yugoslavia. After the war he returned to Opatija, which now belonged to Yugoslavia, and stayed there until his death. Since 1949 he was a member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 1960 he was awarded the order of bratstva i jedinstva .

Works

Car Emin's work was mostly about the sea and the lives of fishermen and sailors. He was a native Istrian writer and wrote novels, short stories and books for young people. He used a čakavian dialect. There are hardly any translations into German.
