Cyprien Katsaris
Cyprien Katsaris ( Greek Κυπριανός Κατσαρής - Kyprianós Katsarís ; born May 5, 1951 in Marseille ) is a French pianist and composer of Cypriot descent.
Life
Cyprien Katsaris, who is known as a brilliant technician, began his training unusually in Cameroon , where his parents lived, before he was able to transfer to the Paris Conservatory in 1964 .
In addition to many other prizes, he won the important Concours Reine Elisabeth in 1972 , the Cziffra competition in 1974 and the Tribune international des jeunes interprètes in 1977.
In 1976 he founded a piano dance duo with the prima ballerina of the Paris Opera, Noëlla Pontois.
He is a specialist in romantic transcriptions and concert paraphrases, which he also creates himself. Legendary is the first complete recording of all the Beethoven - Symphonies transcribed for solo piano by Franz Liszt , played the Katsaris also live and provided even with additional illustrative votes despite the already eminent difficulties. For her he received several important record awards.
Cyprien Katsaris can refer to an impressive discography, including: Sony Classical, EMI, Deutsche Grammophon, BMG-RCA, Decca, Pavane, PIANO 21 and Teldec (Grand Prix du Disque Frédéric Chopin, Warsaw 1985; Grand Prix du Disque Franz Liszt, Budapest 1984 and 1989; British Music Retailers Association's Award 1986; recording from 1984, Germany, for Beethoven's / Liszt's 9th Symphony).
He has been leading the Echternach International Music Festival (Luxembourg) and master classes in Salzburg , The Hague and Hong Kong since 1978 .
In 1992 the Japanese television NHK produced a thirteen-part series on Chopin with Cyprien Katsaris, which includes a solo evening and Katsaris' interpretation courses.
On October 17, 1999, he received a standing ovation at Carnegie Hall at the concert he gave on the 150th anniversary of Frédéric Chopin's death . In January 2001, Cyprien Katsaris decided to found Piano 21, his own, independent music label. Since then he has been publishing his own recordings there, some of which are new editions of existing recordings, some of which have not yet been published. On January 27, 2006, Mozart's 250th birthday, he was the soloist at the opening concert of the Mannheim Mozart Orchestra, which was conducted by its founder Thomas Fey. In March 2006, Cyprien Katsaris gave master classes at Franz Liszt's house in Weimar, making him the first pianist to teach there since the composer's death in 1886. In August 2008 he was invited to Beijing to give two concerts on the occasion of the Olympic Games at the National Center for the Performing Arts. After the world premiere of the China Jubilee , a concert by Cui Shiguang for ten pianos and orchestra, he improvised, among other things, a melody from ancient Greece and melodies from China in homage to the universality of the Olympic Games.
On October 1, 2012 Katsaris suffered during a performance in the Small Hall of the Konzerthaus Berlin a stroke . He noticed that he could no longer feel his left hand and was immediately admitted to a hospital. At the end of November 2012, he had already recovered from it.
