Gregory customer (* 24. February 1954 in Kankakee , Illinois ) is an American opera singer ( tenor ), the particularly for its French and Italian opera - repertoire is known.

Life

education

Kunde studied choral conducting and singing at Illinois State University .

Career

Gregory Kunde made his professional debut in 1978 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago , as Cassio in Giuseppe Verdi's Otello , later as Prunier in Giacomo Puccini's La rondine and Vanya in Leoš Janáček's Káťa Kabanová . He appeared at the Opéra de Montréal as Tybalt in Charles Gounod's Roméo et Juliette and as Arturo in Vincenzo Bellini's I puritani with Luciana Serra , which revealed his affinity for the bel canto repertoire and his impressive upper register , which reached the high F in falsetto (above the high C of a tenor). He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City as Des Grieux in Jules Massenet's Manon .

In Europe he was in Giacomo Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots , Michail Iwanowitsch Glinkas A Life for the Tsar and Gaetano Donizetti's Anna Bolena , at the Pesaro Festival in 1992 as Idreno in Gioachino Rossini's Semiramide and in 1993 as Rinaldo in Gioachino Rossini's Armida , together with Renée Fleming , with a great Applause received.

Other notable roles include: Mitridate, re di Ponto by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Rodrigo in Gioachino Rossini La donna del lago , Arnold in Gioachino Rossini Guillaume Tell , Ernesto in Gaetano Donizetti's Don Pasquale , Nadir in Georges Bizet's Les pêcheurs de perles , Roméo in Charles Gounods Roméo et Juliette , Enée in Hector Berlioz Les Troyens and others.

“While he was initially regarded as an excellent interpreter of the bel canto repertoire, in recent years he has mainly conquered the dramatic parts of Giuseppe Verdi's works .” In November 2012 he made an unexpected, successful debut in Giuseppe Verdi's Otello in Venice . He was likely the first tenor to sing both Rossini and Verdi's versions of Otello that same year . Verdi's Otello he has now u. a. at La Fenice in Venice, in Valencia , Genoa , Salerno , Florence , Turin , Tokyo , Osaka , Nagoya , Seoul and São Paulo , the Arrigo in I vespri siciliani and the Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera in Turin, the Radames in Aida in São Paulo and in Valencia the Don Alvaro in La forza del destino .

In addition to the aforementioned opera houses, Gregory Kunde's engagements also took him to Carnegie Hall in New York City , Houston Grand Opera , Opéra Bastille , Théatre du Châtelet and Théatre des Champs Elysées in Paris , the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Sydney Opera House .
