A film about an untalented singer

Concert of the amateur soprano in 1944, program leaflet

Joyce DiDonato played Florence Foster Jenkins in a 2016 film . Jenkins became well known in the United States through recordings of her fake singing. She is a cult figure of the camp type, whose records have sold better than many other singers for many years. As a self-proclaimed opera diva, she made an unstoppable career in New York in the 1920s. Finally, she gave a single recital in 1944 in Carnegie Hall, which she rented in New York City . He broke all sales records.

In the first comprehensive documentary film about her, Joyce DiDonato sings well-known operatic roles correctly in the title role and slightly off-key again in Jenkins' style. You can also see the effort with which Jenkins staged her appearances as tableaux vivants. Other participants are interviewed in game scenes. The documentary examines these questions: What did Florence hear when she sang? Why was this woman singing so weird again and again that that alone led to a huge crowd at her only big concert? Was it a thirst for recognition, vanity without pain threshold? Was it the lack of love from the father, the first husband, driving them? What was the possible consequence of the illness? How did the sales success come about? It is remarkable how Joyce DiDonato intones the “wrong” variants in the film without losing his composure. The film was shown in the cinemas almost parallel to the feature film version of the story with Meryl Streep .
