Gustave Doré : Cendrillon

Cendrillon ou la Petite Pantoufle de verre ("Cendrillon or the little glass slipper") is the title of a fairy tale from the collection published in 1697 by the French fairy tale poet Charles Perrault . In his version of the very widespread fairy tale material, he used a model from thefairy tale collection of the Italian fairy tale poet Giovanni Battista Basile , published posthumously in 1674as Pentameron (“5-day story”).

action

Cendrillon largely corresponds to the German Cinderella or Cinderella . In contrast to the Grimm brothers , Cendrillon does not lose a golden shoe in the French version, but a shoe made of glass. Another specific feature of Perrault is the mouse-drawn pumpkin carriage that Cendrillon brings to the prince's ball.

Opera

Also called opera material was Cendrillon at times quite popular and was five times edited musical. The one-act opera written by Jean Louis Laruette under this title in 1759 was unsuccessful. 1810 created two operas named Cendrillon : The of Daniel Steibelt written work was in St. Petersburg premiere and enjoyed especially on Russian stages some popularity. More successful, however, was Nicolò Isouard's Cendrillon opera , which was performed all over Europe and was only permanently pushed out of the repertoire by Gioachino Rossini's opera La Cenerentola, which was thematically based on the same source ; today Isouard's opera is no longer in the repertoire.

Most famous was Jules Massenet's opera Cendrillon, composed almost ninety years later, from 1899, which was successfully staged not only in Europe and the USA , but also in Cairo in 1907 . In 1928 the play was shown in London as a puppet show, which was more of a social comedy than a fairy tale. In Germany, the opera was staged for the first time in Darmstadt in 1967 and later in Cologne, but was unable to assert itself because of its allusions in the libretto, which were tailored to French conditions and were not understood by the German audience . In France, on the other hand, Massenet's Cendrillon is still popular today , especially during the Christmas season .

Pauline Viardot also wrote an opera Cendrillon in three acts.

Movies

Modern adaptations of the substance as the ballet Soluschka or Cinderella by Sergei Prokofiev from the year 1945 and the eponymous Disney - Cartoons 1950 attack motives of the Perrault fairy tale and are largely designed for this template.

Others

Cendrillon also appears as a character in Georges Brassens ' Chanson la chasse aux papillons from 1952.
