The Florence Foster Jenkins Story is a German documentary by Ralf Pleger . In a mixture of re-enacted scenes with star mezzo soprano Joyce DiDonato and film and photo documents prepared for the documentary, he tells the life story of amateur soprano Florence Foster Jenkins . The German theatrical release was on November 10, 2016. The film was shown in German cinemas almost parallel to the original English fiction version of the story with Meryl Streep .
content
Florence Foster Jenkins , played by Joyce DiDonato, is known as the "worst singer of all time". Nevertheless, the self-proclaimed opera diva made an unstoppable career in New York in the 1920s: in unusual costumes and with unrestrained devotion, she appeared in front of a steadily growing audience - always believing that she was a great artist. As a patron she founded countless Verdi fan clubs. She released records, was adored by fans, and broke all sales records with her legendary performance at Carnegie Hall in 1944 . The film links its documentary footage from interviews and archival finds with fictional game scenes that underline the contrast between the diva's perception of herself and that of others . Extensive archive material can be used. In the title role, Joyce DiDonato sings well-known operatic roles correctly and again with a voice that is often broken. You can also see the effort with which Jenkins staged her appearances as tableaux vivantes . In the game scenes, the other participants are “interviewed” using documented statements.
The documentary examines these questions: What did Florence hear when she sang? Why did this woman keep singing so weird in public that this in turn led to an increased rush to sell records and to her only big - also self-financed - concert ( camp )? Was it a thirst for recognition, vanity without pain limits? Was it the lack of love from the father, the first husband, driving them? What was the possible consequence of the illness? How did the sales success come about?
criticism
"By combining interview and game scenes, Pleger succeeds in creating a very unique and peculiar atmosphere in which glamor, charm, nostalgia, tragedy and ridiculousness meet."
