Jake Heggie

Jake Heggie (born March 31, 1961 in West Palm Beach , Florida ) is an American composer and pianist.

Jake Heggie has composed the stage works Dead Man Walking (2000), The End of the Affair (2004), At The Statue of Venus (2005) and To Hell and Back (2006), Three Decembers (2008), Moby-Dick (2010) ), Out of Darkness: Two remain (2016), Great Scott (2015) and It's a Wonderful Life (2016). He also created 200 songs, chamber music and orchestral works.

Heggie was composer in residence at the San Francisco Opera in 1998 . His first opera Dead Man Walking premiered there in 2000 with great success. The libretto was by Terrence McNally . Joe Mantello directed. Since then, this work has been seen in 15 international productions, including at New York City Opera , Cincinnati Opera , Opera Pacific , Baltimore Opera , Calgary Opera , Semperoper Dresden, State Opera of South Australia and at the Theater an der Wien . In 2007 alone there were more than 50 performances on the program. His second opera, The End of The Affair , premiered at the Houston Grand Opera in 2004 , with reprises at Madison Opera , Seattle Opera, and Lyric Opera of Kansas City. In 2005 Heggie worked again with Terrence McNally and composed At the Statue of Venus for the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver. His opera To Hell and Back (libretto by Gene Scheer) was commissioned by the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and premiered in November 2006 under the direction of Nicholas McGegan. In 2010 his opera Moby-Dick was premiered with great success at the Dallas Opera , in 2015 Great Scott with Joyce DiDonato in the title role. In 2016, his opera It's a Wonderful Life was released in Houston .
