The Kurfürstendamm underground station is a transfer station for the Berlin underground lines U1 and U9 in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district . It is located at the eastern end of Kurfürstendamm . In the station directory of the BVG it is called Kfo (U1, upper level) and Kfu (U9, below).

The station is registered as a monument .

History and structure

The lower-lying central platform of the then new subway line G (today: U9) was inaugurated together with this on August 28, 1961. Because of its importance for transport at the time, it was made up to 10.73 meters wide. The walls are decorated with light green tiles that had to be renewed in the 1980s after the original tiles began to peel off. The columns are covered with natural-colored mosaics .

Five days later, traffic to Uhlandstrasse , which had been interrupted for four years due to construction work, was resumed on the upper platform . Here the station was added later to improve the transfer situation and therefore has two side platforms . The wall cladding here also consists of green, but smaller tiles and the middle row of supports is dark.

In December 2014 the third elevator went into operation, it connects the southern platform of the U1 with the road. Around 1.3 million euros have been invested in this. Since then, the station has been completely barrier-free .

Others

  • The upper station of today's line U1 was also built according to large-profile standards, although so far only small-profile trains stop here. This is noticeable, for example, in the unusually large distance to the middle row of columns and on the relatively wide platforms and is due to the plans for a large-profile line under Kurfürstendamm that have been revised up to the present day and are unlikely to be implemented in the foreseeable future.
  • The importance attached to the station due to its location in the center of the then divided city becomes clear not only in the dimensions of the platform, but also in the very large mezzanine level with its many entrances. As was customary at the time, these should also serve as a safe way for pedestrians to cross the busy Joachimsthaler Straße / Kurfürstendamm intersection . This level is designed in white, the railings are kept green.
  • The blue entrance signs of the station with the inscription "U-Bhf Kurfürstendamm" are still very well known today due to their proximity to the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and are a popular motif for filming and photo shoots. In the station itself, scenes for the film Christiane F. - We Children from Zoo Station , whose main venue is in the immediate vicinity, were shot.
  • From the opening in 1961 until the end of the 1980s, the station was signposted as "Kurfürstendamm (Joachimstaler Straße)".
  • At one of the subway entrances there is a listed kiosk to which the last remaining traffic pulpit in Berlin is connected.

Connection

In addition to the possibility of changing between lines U1 and U9, there is a transition to the bus lines of the Berlin transport company at the underground station .
