The Schloßstraße underground station is an underground station on the U9 line of the Berlin underground in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, Steglitz district . The station, built between 1971 and 1973, is located below Schloßstraße between Schildhornstraße and Zimmermannstraße. The Bierpinsel restaurant tower , the Boulevard Berlin shopping center and the Rosary Basilica are in the immediate vicinity . The station opened on September 30, 1974.

History and structure

The station was designed as a transfer station between the U9 line and the planned U10 line and, due to the limited space, was built with two central platforms one above the other . At the upper platform, the trains should depart in a northerly direction, and at the lower platform in a southerly direction, and enable directional transfers on the same platform. Since the U10 was not implemented, only the eastern platform sides of the station are used by the U9. The western sides are separated from passenger traffic by a lattice fence; In the track trough, unused tracks are laid without a power rail.

The train station was designed by the architects Schüler & Witte , who also designed the beer brush and the ICC . It has three levels - a distribution level and two platform levels - which are connected to each other by stairs and escalators. The design is typical of the seventies: there are blue, yellow and orange-red wall elements in the platform halls. The ceilings are mostly made of exposed concrete; the distribution level as well as the stair wells are kept or tiled in dark blue-green.

The underground station can be reached via two entrances at the north and south end via several staircases on both sides of Schloßstraße. In addition, the distribution level in the north is directly connected to Boulevard Berlin and the office building at Schloßstraße 110 .

In 2013 it was planned to completely refurbish and modernize the underground station from the end of 2014 to 2017. The lower platform should be closed so that the trains would stop in both directions on the upper platform in the future. According to the BVG business plan, 13.8 million euros were earmarked for the renovation, the Senate Department for Urban Development and Transport planned costs of 11.9 million euros. In the meantime, such reconstruction of the railway facilities is no longer planned.

The renovation began at the beginning of the 2016 summer vacation on July 20, 2016. From this point in time, the U9 between Walther-Schreiber-Platz and Steglitz Town Hall was closed until September 4, 2016; in the summer of 2018 there was another lockout for several weeks. The renovation of the station is still ongoing.

The underground station was placed under monument protection as an ensemble at the beginning of 2017, together with the former Bierpinsel tower restaurant and the Joachim-Tiburtius-Brücke . This was justified with the slightly futuristic character that is typical of the time.

On January 17, 2020, an elevator went into operation that connects the two platforms on top of each other with the northern counter hall. Around 1.3 million euros were invested for this. For barrier-free access to the underground station, another elevator must be installed, which leads from the counter hall to the street surface. This is planned for the end of 2022.

Connection

At the underground station you can change from the U9 line to several bus lines operated by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe.
