Leopoldplatz underground station
The Leopoldplatz underground station is an underground crossing station on the Berlin underground lines U6 and U9 . It is located under the square of the same name in the Berlin district of Wedding in the Mitte district . In the BVG station directory , it has the names Lpo (today's U6, above) and Lpu (U9, below).
History and structure
On March 8, 1923, the Leopoldplatz underground station on the former line C (today: U6) together with the Seestraße - Zinnowitzer Straße extension (today: Natural History Museum) went into operation. With the construction of the new line G (today's U9) from 1959 to 1961, it was replaced by today's crossing station, which opened on August 28, 1961.
The central platform that has been added for the U9 line is at right angles to that of the U6 line and is around 14 meters wide, as an increased number of passengers was expected at the new transfer point. The entrances to this part of the station are in the middle. They lead into the vestibules of the upper part of the station. The wall cladding consists of light blue tiles ; the two-row central columns were clad with white glass mosaic. In contrast to the butterfly ceiling usually used on Line G, the platform was given a flat ceiling.
The platform of the U6 was also completely rebuilt in this context and has since had two side platforms instead of a central platform . The dominant color in this part is yellow. Until October 2009, this also affected the central supports, which have since been painted mint green.
From August 1961 to April 1976 Leopoldplatz was the northern terminus of Line 9. Therefore there are three sweeping tracks to the north that are still in use today. In addition, a connecting track was installed between the two lines, which today is mainly used for transfer trips to the nearby Seestrasse depot .
In 2007, the station was extensively modernized, at the same time the BVG had the test track installed in the area of the U9 replaced by an elastic ballast variant.
The station has been barrier-free thanks to elevators since 2010 .
