African Street Underground Station
The Afrikanische Straße is a station of the Berlin U-Bahn line 6 in the district Wedding of the district center . The BVG runs the station under the internal abbreviation Afr ; the train station is 631 meters from the Kurt-Schumacher-Platz underground station and 587 meters from the Rehberge underground station .
The underground station went into operation on May 3, 1956 as part of the extension of Line C (today: U6) from Seestrasse underground station to Kurt-Schumacher-Platz underground station. Originally, the station was not included in the plans for the expansion. But the post-war development and the Friedrich-Ebert-Siedlung built between 1929 and 1931 justified having its own train station. The settlement in question also received an appreciation as a subtitle for the station name.
The train station is relatively simple, sober and inconspicuous. The architect Bruno Grimmek designed a typical 110-meter-long and eight-meter-wide central platform with a row of columns clad with colorful glass mosaic stones in the middle. The ceiling slopes slightly towards the row of pillars on the platform.
In the course of a complete renovation, the station received new and larger wall tiles by 2016 , these are again light blue. The former advertising space on the back side walls now have Africa motifs framed in dark blue , as do the exits from the mezzanine floors. The previous addition to the name Friedrich-Ebert-Siedlung is no longer used.
An elevator was opened on November 30, 2017, and the underground station has been barrier-free since then . Around 650,000 euros were invested in this. In addition, the four exit stairs and the mezzanine floors were renovated.
