Alt-Mariendorf underground station
The Alt-Mariendorf underground station is in the Berlin district of Mariendorf in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district . It is both the southern terminus of the U6 subway line at the intersection of Reißeckstraße or Friedenstraße and Alt-Mariendorf street with Mariendorfer Damm and an important traffic junction for local public transport .
The station has a central platform one and a half times lower with two exits, the northern one at the level of the platform center. The exits lead to two separate intermediate levels. There are three smaller shops on the southern mezzanine level. The underground station has an elevator between the platform and the southern mezzanine level as well as the street and is therefore barrier-free . Rainer G. Rümmler designed the station . The walls are covered with large white ceramic tiles , while the central supports are clad with natural stone. The strong dark blue and red colors are striking, both in the vestibule and on the staircases. The opening took place on February 28, 1966 as part of the extension of the then line C II from Tempelhof (Südring) to Alt-Mariendorf. The day after, the line name was changed to line 6 (from 1984: line U6).
A sweeping system with three tracks is located south of the two platform tracks. In addition, there is a double track changing system north of the platform tracks. An extension of the line beyond Alt-Mariendorf is not planned.
At the end of 2018, the station, along with twelve other stations, was placed under a preservation order as a witness to the West Berlin subway construction in the 1960s and 1970s .
