Platz der Luftbrücke underground station
The Platz der Luftbrücke underground station is a station on the U6 line of the Berlin underground . It is located under the square of the same name and the southern end of Mehringdamm on the border between the districts of Kreuzberg and Tempelhof .
history
The underground station was opened on February 14, 1926 under the name Kreuzberg and was the terminus of line C II (today: U6). On September 10, 1927, the station lost its position as a terminus, as the line was extended to the Paradestrasse subway station (former name: airport ). In 1937 the Kreuzberg underground station was renamed Airport and has been called Platz der Luftbrücke since 1975 . Until it ceased operations in 2008, the underground station connected Tempelhof Airport with the city's local transport network.
The station has four entrances, one to the north (Mehringdamm) and three entrances to Platz der Luftbrücke.
The underground station was built according to plans by Alfred Grenander and is - besides the Märkisches Museum underground station - the only one of the Berlin underground without central supports.
Renovation work on the station began in spring 2020. The platform slab will be renewed and a guidance system for the blind will be installed, two elevators and an additional exit with stairs to the corner of Mehringdamm / Dudenstrasse will also be built.
Connection
At the underground station you can change from line U6 to bus lines 104 and 248 of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe .
Location
The subway station served as the location for the ZDF children's series Löwenzahn in episode 79. In the scene, Peter Lustig is waiting for the subway and meets the rat friend Kiki. Also a scene at the beginning of the film Flightplan - Without a trace takes place at this subway station.
