Presidential elections in Cape Verde 2001

The presidential elections in Cape Verde in 2001 took place on February 11 and February 25, 2001. It was the third election since the introduction of the multiparty system in Cape Verde in 1990 .

Candidates

Former Prime Ministers Pedro Pires (PAICV) and Carlos Veiga (MpD) stood for election as representatives of the two largest parties in Cape Verdean, the African Party for Cape Verdean Independence (PAICV) and the Movement for Democracy (MpD) .

Previously, in the parliamentary elections in January 2001, the PAICV had won an absolute majority of seats with a relative majority.

The turnout was 51.7%.

After this election, won by a very narrow margin, Pedro Pires succeeded the President from 1991 to 2001, António Mascarenhas Monteiro (MpD) in office.

Pedro Pires and Carlos Veiga were the only candidates in the following presidential elections in February 2006 . Pires was also able to win this election with 50.98% of the vote.
