Richard Alan Bonynge AC , CBE (born September 29, 1930 in Sydney ) is an Australian conductor .

Life

Bonynge, who began playing the piano at the age of five, first studied piano at the Conservatorium of Music with Lindley Evans, a former piano accompanist of the legendary Nellie Melba .

As a répétiteur in the institute's opera class, he met his future wife, Joan Sutherland . Together the two went to London, where he continued his studies at the Royal College of Music . In 1954 they married. In 1956 their son was born.

After the singing career of Joan Sutherland began in 1959, both decided to work together exclusively as a singer and conductor from the mid-1960s - first at concerts, later at opera performances and recordings. He made his debut as a conductor in 1962 when he had to replace the suddenly ill conductor at a concert by his wife. Since Joan Sutherland was already a star at that time and Bonynge a still unknown and inexperienced conductor in the music scene, he had to endure a lot of malice and criticism at first . In the following years, however, his achievements convinced both the public and the professional world of his abilities.

The first major joint success was an Australian tour in 1965, for which, on Bonynge's recommendation, the then largely unknown Luciano Pavarotti was hired as a tenor partner of Joan Sutherland.

Bonynge was artistic director of the Vancouver Opera (1974–1978) and from 1976 (until 1986) he was the musical director of the Australian Opera in Sydney. Guest performances, first with his wife, after her stage farewell alone, took Bonynge to all the musical centers of the world.

meaning

In the years from 1960 until today, Richard Bonynge developed into one of the most respected and important conductors and experts in the field of bel canto operas and the French repertoire worldwide. He pioneered the rediscovery of forgotten works by Rossini , Bellini , Donizetti , Massenet and others for the repertoire. Together with his wife in particular, he played such rare works as Esclarmonde (Massenet), Le roi de Lahore (Massenet), Semiramide (Rossini) and many others. Accordingly, his discography is very extensive. It includes over 50 complete opera recordings, numerous ballet music and a large number of recital recordings with various singers.
