Michael Jarrell

Michael Jarrell (born October 8, 1958 in Geneva ) is a Swiss composer .

Life

Michael Jarrell studied composition at the Conservatory of his hometown Geneva and with Klaus Huber at the University of Music in Freiburg .

His compositions have received numerous international awards. Among other things, he received the Beethoven Prize of the City of Bonn , the Marescotti Prize (both 1986), the Prize for Composition from the Dutch Gaudeamus Foundation (1988) and the Siemens Prize (1990). From 1989 to 1990 he was a member of the Istituto Svizzero di Roma. As composer in residence he was invited by the local orchestra to Lyon (October 1991 to June 1993) and later to the Lucerne Festival (1996). Since 1993 he has been Professor of Composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . In 2001 he was appointed Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres . Since 2004 he has been teaching composition at the Geneva Conservatory . He also teaches composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna as a main subject teacher.

His compositions include instrumental works such as Abschied (for piano and orchestra, 2001) and the cycle Assonance (for various ensemble compositions , 1983-2000) as well as operas ; he set Cassandre Christa Wolf's story Kassandra to music (premiered in Paris in 1994); his opera Le Père , which premiered at the Schwetzingen Festival in 2010, is based on Heiner Müller's autobiographical prose text Der Vater .
