José María Sánchez Verdú (born March 7, 1968 in Algeciras , Spain ) is a Spanish conductor and composer of contemporary music.

Life

Sánchez Verdú was born in Algeciras ( Spain ) in 1968 . From 1986 to 1994 he studied conducting , musicology and composition at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid . He also graduated from Complutense University in Madrid with a law degree . 2017 Doctorate at the Universidad Autónoma Madrid. From 1996 to 1999 he studied composition with Franco Donatoni in Siena (1992) and with Hans Zender in Frankfurt am Main (1996–1999). In 1997 a scholarship from the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts took him to Rome . Sánchez-Verdú has been teaching composition at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf since 2001. For several years he was a lecturer in composition at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden . 2014–2015 he was a substitute professor for composition at the University of Music, Drama and Media Hanover , and from 2008 to 2019 professor for composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón in Saragossa, Spain. He is currently a member of the Artistic Council for Composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and since 2019 Professor of Composition at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid.

In 2005 he was invited to be composer in residence at the Carinthian Summer Festival (Austria). In 2007 he was composer in residence at the V Festival Internacional de Musica Contemporanea de Lima (Peru). Several working grants from the Experimental Studio for Acoustic Art ( SWR , Freiburg). 2014–2015 he received a scholarship from the international artist house Villa Concordia in Bamberg. 2014–2015 he was composer in residence at the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical in Spain. From 2015–2016 he was composer in residence at the Dresden Philharmonic with several concerts and two world premieres. He lives in Berlin and Madrid.

José María Sánchez Verdú has received important composition awards for his work, such as three composition awards from the SGAE (Sociedad General de Autores y Editores) (1996 and 1997), the composition award from the INAEM / Colegio de España in Paris (1998), the Premio Ciudad de Alcoy ( 1998), the Irino Composition Prize (Tokyo, 1998), the 1st Composition Prize of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie (1999), the Advancement Prize of the Siemens Music Prize ( Munich , 2000), the Composition Prize of the Bergische Biennale (Wuppertal, 2002), the National Prize for Composition by the Spanish Ministry of Culture (2003), "Honorary Conductor" of the Orquesta Manuel de Falla in Cádiz , Spain (2007), Antara Prize of the Festival de Música Contemporanea de Lima, Peru (2007), Ibn Arabi Prize (Ibn Arabi Society, 2015) , Premio de Honor de la Semana de Música Religiosa de Cuenca (2017) etc.

His opera Argo was premiered on April 27, 2018 in the Rokokotheater Schwetzingen .
