Live and act
Joneleit grew up in Nieder-Roden near Offenbach. In the local music club he learned to play the drums. After high school and community service, Joneleit first played the drums in regional rock and jazz groups. In 1990 he moved to the USA. There he studied in Vermillion ( South Dakota ) and Madison (Wisconsin) with Stephen Yarbrough (* 1946), Robert Marek (1915–1995), Lewis Hamvas and Joel Naumann (student of Stefan Wolpe ).
Joneleit has been working as a freelance composer since 1997. He is particularly interested in larger formats such as musical theater and orchestral works, but also chamber music, film and radio plays. In 2002 his first portrait CD with chamber music was released. In 2006 he received the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation 's Prize for Composers , and in the same year his piece Le tout, le rien was included in the Contemporary Music edition of the German Music Council . Michael Herrschel about Joneleit: "One can look for Jens Joneleit's musical roots in free jazz , which fascinated him early on, as well as in the impartial earnestness with which he began to study the old European heritage in all its contradictions."
Jens Joneleit lives in Berlin. In 2010 he was awarded the Culture Prize of his hometown Rodgau for 2009. On October 3, 2010, his opera was Metanoia. Beyond thinking, premiered for the opening of the alternative stage of the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden under the direction of Daniel Barenboim .
