Intel 900 series
The Intel 900 series is a family of Northbridges - referred to by Intel as a Memory Controller Hub (MCH) or Graphics and Memory Controller Hub (GMCH) - which, together with a Southbridge , the I / O Controller Hub , is a chipset for x86 -Microprocessors made by Intel. The chipsets of the 900 series are mainly used for the Intel Pentium 4 / Pentium D , Intel Celeron (NetBurst) / Celeron D and Intel Core 2 processors .
description
The first chipset of the 900 series is the i915 (code name Grantsdale ). It was launched in July 2004 together with the i925 and was the first chipset from Intel for PCI Express . There were the versions i915P / i915PL without and i915G / GL / GV with an integrated graphics processor (IGP) . This is the Graphics Media Accelerator GMA-900, which runs with a chip clock of 333 MHz. The associated Southbridge was the ICH6 / R .
The i925X (code name Alderwood ) appeared at the same time as the i915 and, in contrast to this, was intended for the performance segment. The version i925XE appeared later , which was also designed for a Front Side Bus (FSB) of 266 MHz (FSB 1066). The ICH6 / R was also used as the southbridge.
The i945 (code name Lakeport ) appeared as the successor to the i915 shortly after the i955 in June 2005. Analogous to the i915, it was also available as the i945P / PL without and i945G with IGP . The further developed Graphics Media Accelerator GMA-950 is used here, which is controlled with a clock frequency of 400 MHz compared to the GMA-900 used in the i915G / GL / GV.
The i955X (code name Glenwood ) appeared in April 2005 as the successor to the i925 . Together with the i945, it was the first chipset from Intel to bring support for dual-core processors such as B. the Pentium D and was combined with the ICH7 / R.
In June 2006, Intel brought out the i965 family (code name Broadwater ) along with the new Core 2 architecture . This consists of the variants P965 without IGP , G965 / Q965 with IGP and Q963 also with IGP , but without a separate PEG port (slot for a PCI Express for Graphics (PEG) card). The ICH8 / R / DH / DO is used as the south bridge on the i965.
As a successor to the i955 2006, appeared in early i975X as a new high-end chipset. As a special feature, it offers 2 PEG slots for graphics cards for the first time. However, its PCIe x16 interface is divided between these two slots, so that each slot is controlled with only 8 instead of the usual 16 lanes.
