Albert von Schirnding grew up in Regensburg as the son of the "boss of the Thurn-und-Taxis general administration" Otto Karl von Schirnding (1892–1979) and his wife Marie Victoire (born Verri della Bosia, 1907–1989). In 1951 he published his first poems. As a freelancer for the Süddeutsche Zeitung in 1970 he was involved in an on humanity and intelligence -oriented education and against a "conservative trend reversal" in education policy. He also became known as a literary critic , as an interpreter of Greek philosophy and as the author of autobiographical prose sketches , which he integrated into his volumes of short stories from the late 1980s .

From 1991 to 2004 Albert von Schirnding headed the literature department at the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts . Since 2004 he has been Vice President of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz . As editor and commentator he has supervised works from Lessing and Thomas Mann to Rainer Malkowski ; In 2005 he opened the poetry anthology Der Ewige Brunnen for contemporary texts.
