The Friedrich Baur Prize has been awarded by the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Friedrich Baur Foundation since 1990. It was brought into being on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the entrepreneur and founder Friedrich Baur (1890-1965). The prize has been awarded annually since 1990 and every two years since 2010.

The prize honors people and institutions who come from Franconia , Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria or who work there. Similar to the Academy's departments, the prizes are awarded in several categories: visual arts, literature, music and performing arts, and since 2012 also film and media art.

The award ceremony takes place at different locations. In 1990 , when it was founded, Burgkunstadt , the seat of the Friedrich Baur Foundation, was chosen; in the following years historical rooms such as the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth , the Cuvilliés Theater in Munich or the ETA Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg.
