Uwe Hoppe
Uwe Hoppe (born December 7, 1954 in Hondelage near Braunschweig ) is a German playwright, director, author and actor. He became known worldwide for his Wagner adaptations, which have been performed annually since 1982 parallel to the Bayreuth Festival in Bayreuth .
Life
Childhood and Adolescence (1954–1973)
Hoppe was born as the third of four children in Hondelage. His father, a trained bricklayer, and his mother ran a laundry together. The boy attended elementary school in Hondelage and, from 1964, the Neue Oberschule in Braunschweig, a modern-language-scientific grammar school. At grammar school, Hoppe obtained his university entrance qualification in 1973, which qualified him for studies.
When Hoppe played the seventh Heinzelmann in the play “Die Heinzelmännchen von Köln” at the age of five, he knew that one day he would like to work at the theater. At the age of ten he dramatized a novella by Johann Peter Hebel , which was then performed. Hoppe completed his first directorial work at the age of fifteen , staging the television film “Die Kommode” by Curt Goetz from memory after he had seen it on television.
Career
Studies and first engagements (1973–1980)
Uwe Hoppe began studying pedagogy in 1973 at the Lower Saxony University of Education, Braunschweig department. But he broke off this to study musicology, art history and German at the Technical University of Berlin from 1975. One of his professors was Carl Dahlhaus , editor of the Richard Wagner Complete Edition. From 1976 he also began studying acting and chanson singing at the Schneidereyth drama studio. With the successful graduation in 1980 he finally got his stage maturity. His final project was a baroque comedy at the Neukölln Opera .
During his studies he was employed as an assistant director at the Braunschweig State Theater , the Hessian State Theater Wiesbaden and the Renaissance Theater (Berlin) ; he was also an actor and singer at the Neuköllner Oper from 1979 to 1981 and was a. a. 1980 Dramaturgy employee at Achim Freyer . He also wrote a scenic oratorio, the libretto, for Stations of Hope , which was premiered in Braunschweig in 1981.
Founding of the studio stage (1981)
Uwe Hoppe traveled to Bayreuth to visit the Ring of the Century , where he met the director Werner Hildenbrand. During his academic studies, Hoppe received an offer from him to stage and also broke. a. therefore stop studying. Together with Werner Hildenbrand, Eberhard Wagner and Ilse Schörner, he then founded the Bayreuth Studiobühne in 1981 , which was then housed in the "Schützenhaus". Early work as a freelance director and actor (1982–1988)
For the 1982 season Hoppe wrote his first Wagner adaptation. However, since the studio stage had to move out of the "Schützenhaus", the work could not be performed there. That is why they looked for a suitable location in Bayreuth and finally found the Steingraeber house . A theater was built in the inner courtyard, which was dismantled at the end of the summer. The love boy 's ring premiered there in 1982 . This ring adaptation was sold out and journalists from all over the world reported about it. Hoppe was the first director to show Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen in abbreviated form in one evening. Due to its great success, the work was played again in 1983 and then made a guest appearance at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1984.
In 1984 Rotkäppchen , which Hoppe freely wrote after the Brothers Grimm, was premiered in the new building of the Bayreuth studio stage . A new version of the piece was played in Stuttgart in 2002 .
The set for The Ring of the Love Boy by Karlheinz Beer was finally destroyed and Hoppe decided to write a new play for the 1985 season. Since similar themes appear in some of the Wagner operas Parsifal and Lohengrin , Hoppe combined both works in Paxiphall & Lohengrün . After the successful premiere, there were guest performances in Nuremberg and Munich. The work was played until 1987.
At the same time, Hoppe was permanently engaged in Hof until 1984, but then decided to work freely as a director and actor. In 1985 he brought the first German adaptation of Kassandra by Christa Wolf to the stage in Nuremberg. In 1986 he wrote the monodrama Bye, Bye Marilyn for the same theater , which he then directed and premiered. This piece is about the last hours of Marilyn Monroe . He then traveled all over Germany as an actor and director, working a. a. in Hof , Detmold and on the stages of the city of Essen .
After Paxiphall & Lohengrün he wrote Tannreuther, Meistersinger . This adaptation is based on the Wagner operas Tannhäuser and the Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg . Hoppe put both works together, because both operas are about singing wars, in which a woman is the first prize. Tannreuther, Meistersinger was shown at the court theater in the Steingraeber-Palais until 1991.
Leubald and re- recording of Sanspareil (1989–1995)
The text of Richard Wagner's youth work Leubald was printed for the first time as early as 1988 , at the time in a program booklet for Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Bayreuth Festival . Uwe Hoppe was commissioned to show a 20-minute excerpt from it. After the great success of this short scene, Hoppe shortened the text of this piece, which actually lasts more than six hours, to about 90 minutes. The premiere of Leubald took place on the changeable stage by Tannreuther, Meistersinger .
With the two Wagner adaptations, Hoppe made guest appearances in Dresden in 1990 and in Wolfenbüttel in 1991 on the occasion of the 400th birthday of the theater there.
When Hoppe visited the Sanspareil rock garden for the first time , the dream arose to stage there once. In 1992, for the first time since the times of Margravine Wilhelmine , a play was played again in the ruins of the Sanspareil theater. It was precisely this work that was Leubald , with which Uwe Hoppe reanimated this stage. It was played there until 1995.
In 1992 he also worked with Harry Kupfer at the Komische Oper Berlin .
Hoppe throughout Germany (1991–1999)
In order to have adapted all of Richard Wagner's operas , Hoppe wrote Tristan, the fleeing Irrländer and Isolde for 1991 . This piece takes on Wagner's stage works Tristan und Isolde and The Flying Dutchman . The Tristan ran until 1993.
In addition, Hoppe also performed pieces he had written himself. After Alexander Pushkin , Mozart and Salieri celebrated its world premiere in Bayreuth in 1991. The musical Glück im Pech, Spiel in der Liebe with the music of Hans-Martin Gräbner was premiered in 1992 in the Studiobühne Bayreuth.
Due to the great success of his Wagner adaptations, Uwe Hoppe was invited to direct in Hanover . There Hoppes Zurück vom Ring with the music of Jeff Goldberg was shown in 1993. This ring revue was staging of the year in Hanover.
After every Wagner opera was played once in the Steingraeber-Hof-Theater, Hoppe wrote a new adaptation of the ring. The Ring der Niederungen treats the material of the Ring des Nibelungen and transfers it to the present. At the end of the piece, which runs from 1994 to 2042, mankind falls back into the Stone Age. The piece caused a lot of offense and was played until 1996.
In Sanspareil, Hoppe then staged Amphitryon by Molière with original violin music for the years 1995 to 1997 . The orchestra for this was in the orchestra pit of the theater.
Hoppe Lohngrien wrote in Anhalt for the theater in Dessau . This work, which was premiered in 1995, transfers the theme of Lohengrin as an East-West conflict.
Hoppe adapted the plot of Der Fliegende Holländer in Blood Red Sails , which was played in Hof in 1995. With this piece Hoppe opened the studio of the new theater.
After playing The Ring of the Lowlands for three summers, Parzival was premiered in 1997 at the court theater in the Steingraeber House . This work is mainly based on the novel by Wolfram von Eschenbach and was only played in 1998. Since most of the actors in Parzival were students and moved away from Bayreuth, Hoppe had to write a new play for the 1999 season.
On the 250th anniversary of the opening of the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, Hoppe staged “The Fairy Queen - A Midsummer Night's Dream” by Henry Purcell / William Shakespeare there in 1998 . Since the Sanspareil rock garden was opened in 1749, he staged The Play of Love and Chance in the local theater for the 250th anniversary .
After Hoppe staged the murder of Arnolt Bronnen's father in 1998 in the Theater der Altstadt in Stuttgart , there was his next work Faust I , which ran there in more than 300 performances for eleven years.
Hojotoho! (1999-2006)
Several people have already advised Hoppe to show all Wagner operas in one evening. And so it came about that Hojotoho! It premiered in Bayreuth in 1999. In this adaptation, in which Uwe Hoppe himself was seen as an actor, five people play through all of Wagner's operas once. The great success with the public contributed to the fact that Hojotoho! until 2006 was played.
Since this stage design could also be changed, Hoppe wrote Der Walkürenritt , which premiered in 2002, for the 150th anniversary of Steingraeber & Sons . The play Selige Öde auf Sonniger Höh was first performed in 2004 and is about Richard Wagner and Ludwig II. Steingraeber & Sons also used the Hof Theater for concerts on evenings when there were no play. Chanson evenings were also given.
In addition to the plays in the Steingraeber-Hof-Theater, other works by Uwe Hoppe were premiered in the Studiobühne Bayreuth , in the Hermitage and in Sanspareil. So z. B. A new translation of Romeo and Juliet for the Hermitage . In 2005 Hoppe was a guest director at the Schloss Neersen Festival , where he staged a musical based on William Shakespeare , all's well that ends well .
Her den Ring and other stage works (2007–2012)
For the 2007 season, Hoppe wrote a new adaptation of Der Ring des Nibelungen . Her den Ring ran from 2007 to 2009. The theme of the ring repeats itself ad infinitum, with no prospect that there will be no world fire in the end.
Uwe Hoppe also staged in Kulmbach for the theater group “Buschklopfer”. Karli's aunt was played there in 2007, in 2008 Hoppe's scandalous play Wen der Hafer sticht and Hans im Glück in 2010.
In Sanspareil in 2008 he staged Die witzigen Frauen von Windsor and Triumph der Liebe nach Marivaux 2010. For the Margravial Opera House , Hoppe wrote the semi-opera “Wilhelmine, Liebe ist nur Fantasy” with music by Hans-Martin Gräbner, which premiered in 2009.
In 2010 he re- directed Faust I and Faust II in Stuttgart . Sometimes there are performance dates on which both parts are shown one after the other on one day.
Tannreuther, Meistersinger was newly staged in 2010 and performed on the stage of the Steingraeber Hoftheater. Hoppe staged Shakespeare's Hamlet in Sanspareil in 2012.
Richard! My life! and Leubald (2012-2014)
Since the 2012 season, Hoppes Richard! My life! played, which dares the historical review of the Bayreuth Festival and the relationship between Richard and Cosima Wagner . The set designed by Michael Bachmann represented the Schnürboden of the Festspielhaus, which blended particularly well into the roofing of the court theater. The piece also celebrated great success when it was revived in 2013 and 2014.
In the Stuttgart theater in the old town he staged Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen and The Pillow Man by Martin McDonagh . A guest performance with the pillow man in Perm is planned for October. The play was resumed on October 28, 2014 in the Old Town Theater.
Together with the bush knockers he brought his work The Happy Shepherdess Belinde on stage and played the role of the witch in it. The world premiere took place on July 18, 2014 in Himmelkron.
For the anniversary year 2013 (200 years Richard Wagner ) Hoppe Leubald staged a new one. For this purpose, the rococo garden near Steingraebers was used for the first time. While this piece was played on Sanspareil in 2013, it was only performed in the garden in 2014.
Loriot , Tristan or Isolde and he's back (2015-2016)
In Bremen Uwe Hoppe staged the one-person play Sisi - Dreams of an Empress , which he also wrote himself. The monodrama for an actress and singer is about the life of Empress Elisabeth . The world premiere took place in February 2015.
In early 2015, Hoppe's work on Loriot's Dramatic Works began in the Theater der Altstadt in Stuttgart , which is a dramatic reworking of the scenes and skits by Vicco von Bülow . Hoppe's work pays homage to the humorist who died in 2011. The premiere took place on May 29, 2015. After the great success of the piece this season, a resumption was ordered for October 2015.
Hoppe wrote the drama Tristan oder Isolde? For the Steingraeber court theater . Wagner Untold . It is the second time after Tristan, the fleeing Irishman and Isolde that Hoppe treated the Tristan material again. For this work, however, he not only oriented himself on the work of Richard Wagner , but also on the historical material of Gottfried von Strasbourg . In this way Uwe Hoppe creates a drama that also shows the prehistory of the plot that is only told in Wagner's opera .
Tristan or Isolde was shown for another year in the 2016 summer season. The resumption premiere took place on July 23, 2016.
The novel Er ist wieder da by Timur Vermes , published in 2012, was dramatized by Uwe Hoppe and premiered on February 12, 2016 in the Theater der Altstadt. Hoppe also staged Warten auf Godot by Samuel Beckett . Bringing this work to the stage is a long-cherished dream for the director. The premiere took place on April 8, 2016 in the sold-out theater in the old town. In the same theater, Hoppe directed Max Frisch's drama Andorra , which premiered on October 14, 2016.
On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 1517, Uwe Hoppe wrote the play Mein Herr Käthe . The work, written for two actors, is about the life of Martin Luther and his wife Katharina von Bora . It premiered on October 31, 2016 in the sold-out Theater im Palais in Berlin .
Heda! Heda! Hedo! (since 2017)
In the summer of 2017, Hoppes celebrated Heda! Heda! Hedo! Premiere at the court theater in the Steingraeber Palais. In terms of content, it deals thematically with Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen . Elfriede von Lo
Since 1994 Uwe Hoppe has performed under the pseudonym Elfriede von Lo . He gives his own chanson evenings in women's costume and has already had celebrated appearances in Bayreuth , Coburg , Kiel , Stuttgart and at private events. In 2013 he was awarded the bronze penis for these achievements.
