content

first act

The first scene of the play already reveals the end: Tristan and Isolde die, chaos spreads when Kurwenal kills Melot. King Brand remembers how it all began; thus the following act is to be regarded as a narrative. Tristan comes to the court of the King of Cornwall, pursued by pirates. The young hero reveals himself to be the ruler's nephew; his mother died while giving birth. He is supposed to succeed Brand on the throne after his death. Tristan frees Cornwall from Irish tyranny by beheading Morold, leader of the Irish army. The severed head is brought to the dead man's fiancé, Isolde. She finds a piece of a sword in it. Badly injured, Tristan is brought to Isolde under the pseudonym Tantris, who nurses him back to health. But she soon discovers her husband's murderer in him and wants revenge. But before she can murder Tantris with his sword, the eyes of the two meet and the love between them ignites. Tristan goes back to Kornwall and reports to König Marke von Isolde. Melot, the king's advisor, sees her as the ideal wife for Marke, who actually only wants Tristan. So Tristan goes back to Ireland with a heavy heart, kills a dragon there and is allowed to take Isolde with him as a prize and take her to Kornwall. Isolde demands revenge on the ship. She sees Tristan as a traitor who only came as a courtship. She instructs her wet nurse Brangäne to hand them a death potion. However, this decides differently and hands the couple another, which they believe is a love potion. However, it is only a glass of water. Both fall on each other and can only be separated again with difficulty. King Marke appears and instead of Isolde takes Brangäne with him as a bride, since Isolde cannot part with Tristan. The two women only exchange ideas after the wedding night.

Second act

A conversation takes place between Isolde and Brangäne at the court of King Marke. The nurse warns the young lover; a relationship with Tristan is extremely dangerous, since Isolde is married to Marke. She is reminded of different situations in which a discovery could only be avoided by a hair's breadth and only because Brangäne and Kurwenal were watching out for Tristan and Isolde. Brangäne is expelled, Tristan appears. The lovers observe two couples and come to the conclusion that their love is different. Only in death could they finally be united for ever, without fear of any discovery. This is followed by the discovery of inflagrantie by Marke and Melot. Brand is devastated and declares:

“You were my life, Tristan. You forced this woman [Isolde] on me. I didn't touch her. I held back, Tristan. My love is so great Unshakable, infinite. "

But Tristan cannot and does not want to live anymore. Longing for death, he wants to throw himself into Melot's sword and can only barely be held back. Isolde wants to do the same, but Brangäne stops her. Tristan is banished from the court of Markes.

Third act

Having become an alcoholic and married to Isolde Weißhand, Tristan lives on. He throws himself into battles and wars so that he can finally die. He cannot consummate his marriage because he only loves Isolde. Together with Kurwenal, he remembers the time when they crept to Isolde in Kornwall in disguise and watched their judgment of God. By a trick of Tristan Isolde could be declared innocent. In a wild agony, the hero is told the story of his parents, Blanchefleur and rival. His father died before he was born, and his mother died with him. Their love was also overshadowed by social constraints and differences. By strangling his wife Isolde Weißhand, she announces Isolde's arrival. She appears, but can only watch Tristan's death. The first scene is repeated, Brand and Brangäne admit their love for one another. Isolde states the past:

"Where were we? Where are we? Who are we? What should we have lived? Why did i come What did i expect Hold on to what could no longer be held? We are drawn, wounded. What madness drove me here? I wanted to be with you like once in May. Past. You lived I've lived. Everyone went their own way. We went together for a little while. Now our lines crossed again. Short. Painful. The memory is filthy with disgust and terrible awakening. How sobering. We are yellowed images of an overjoyed youth. Distorted caricatures of ourselves. It's better that way. Nothing more would have come of it. No fulfillment, just emptying. Dreamed up, longed out, hoped for. We weren't a couple that could have endured in everyday life. Everyday worries, children screaming, milk boiled over. Quarrels, bickering, teasing, bickering. Unspoken offenses. Could we have lived, could have endured? Our love was only great because it was not allowed to be. "

She dies a love death without outside influences. The piece ends with the lovers Kevin and Chantalle, who love each other on the graves of the lovers.
