Gabriele Knapstein

Gabriele Knapstein (* 1963 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German art historian . She is a curator and has been the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin since September 1, 2016 .

Career

Knapstein studied art history , history and philosophy at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , the Ruhr University Bochum and the Humboldt University in Berlin . With her dissertation George Brecht: Events. She did her doctorate on George Brecht's event scores from 1959-63 (published by Wiens Verlag, Berlin) .

Knapstein was involved in the realization of exhibitions of the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) and, among other things, took on tour support outside of central Europe.

Since 1999, together with Ingrid Buschmann and Matthias Osterwold, she has been responsible for the conception and realization of the concert series “Music by Visual Artists” for the Hamburger Bahnhof and other partners.

From 1999 to 2001 she worked as a research assistant at the Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart, and later as an exhibition manager. Due to her longstanding ties to the Nationalgalerie , its director Udo Kittelmann recommended her for the position of curator of the museum. On September 1, 2016, she took over the management of the museum from the retired Eugen Blume .

Knapstein has also been a member of the University Council of the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art since it was established in 2004.
