Werner Andreas Albert (born January 10, 1935 in Weinheim ; † November 10, 2019 in Brisbane ) was a German conductor .

Life

After studying history, musicology and school music at the University of Heidelberg , Werner Andreas Albert gained his first experience in orchestral conducting from 1959 to 1963 as a guest student with the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan . He made his debut as a conductor in 1961 with the Heidelberg Chamber Orchestra . Through the mediation of Hans Rosbaud , he got a job in 1963 as first conductor of the Northwest German Philharmonic in Herford , where he succeeded Richard Kraus as chief conductor in 1969 .

In 1971 he became chief conductor of the Gulbenkian Foundation Orchestra . In 1974 he moved to the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra in the same position .

From 1983 to 1990 Werner Andreas Albert was chief conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Brisbane ( Queensland ), Australia . In addition, he was appointed artistic advisor to the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra in 1993 and was employed as chief conductor from 1995 to 1998.

From 1998 Albert worked as a freelance conductor and pursued guest conductors and recording projects around the world.

Werner Andreas Albert last lived in Australia and Germany.

Werner Andreas Albert worked for Classic Production Osnabrück a . a. the complete orchestral works by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Paul Hindemith as well as an extensive presentation of the works by Hans Pfitzner and Siegfried Wagner . His numerous recordings mainly include lesser-known composers such as Ernst Boehe , Richard Wetz , Benjamin Frankel , Hermann Goetz , Ernst Pepping , Gordon Sherwood and Robert Volkmann . He has recorded numerous concerts with almost all of the ARD's radio symphony orchestras ; The number of recordings alone for WDR , with which he has been working for over 40 years, is over 500 works.

In 1975 Werner Andreas Albert was the first German chief conductor to enable the "Nürnberger Symphoniker" to work under the direction of a woman, the conductor Hortense von Gelmini .

Werner Andreas Albert was a professor at the Meistersinger Conservatory in Nuremberg and the Nuremberg University of Music . For 25 years, until 1999, he was artistic director of the Bavarian State Youth Orchestra . Today he is the honorary conductor of this orchestra.

At the University of Queensland, Albert supervised selected master’s students.
