Museum Lothar Fischer in the city park

The Museum Lothar Fischer is a museum in Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate , which mainly deals with the work of the artist Lothar Fischer .

About 60 sculptures and sculptures by the artist are exhibited on two floors on an area of 500 square meters . In addition, the museum deals in changing exhibitions with the artist group SPUR , of which Lothar Fischer was a member. The museum shows three changing exhibitions every year, which deal with Fischer's immediate surroundings, a current contemporary position as a sculptor and a contribution to classical modernism.

Following the museum, a sculpture path to the town hall square is to be designed with other works by Fischer. However, this project will only be started once the plans for the redevelopment of the city park have been completed.

History of the museum

At the end of the 1990s, Lothar Fischer and his wife founded the Lothar & Christel Fischer Foundation with the aim of dedicating a museum to his work. Since Fischer had spent a large part of his childhood and youth in Neumarkt, but also because of a suggestion by the Neumarkt poet Margret Hölle , he preferred the city as a location. When the city council decided to build such a museum, Fischer bequeathed his entire collection with over 300 works, but also letters and documents to the city of Neumarkt.

At the beginning of 2002, the Neumarkt architect Johannes Berschneider was commissioned to build such a museum in the city park behind the castle , who then designed the entire building in collaboration with Fischer. Construction began in June 2003 and the museum was opened on June 19, 2004. Fischer himself died four days earlier on June 15, 2004 in Baierbrunn .

Lothar Fischer Prize

Since 2005, the Lothar & Christel Fischer Foundation has been awarding the Lothar Fischer Prize every two years in cooperation with the City of Neumarkt. This is intended as a sponsorship award for artists (with a focus on sculpture), who will also be offered their own exhibition the following year. The prize money is € 5,000. The jury is headed by the Munich gallery owner Marie-José van de Loo , who is also a member of the Foundation Board.
