War memorial in Novorschew

In 1396 the Novgorod Republic built a fortress Rzheva on the border with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . This was repeatedly destroyed and abandoned during the armed conflicts, which is why it was soon called Rschewa Pustaja (Russian pusto for empty , abandoned ). After another destruction in 1536 the administration of the surrounding area was transferred to the fortress Zavolochye .

When the Pskov governorship was established in 1777, it was decided to build a new town on the Sorot River as the administrative center of the district (Ujesds) and to name it Novorschew (i.e. New Rzhev ). Ultimately, the new city was not built on the Sorot, but on the Arso Lake, in place of the village of the same name, but under the intended name Novorschew .

During the Second World War , Novorschew was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on July 17, 1941 and recaptured on February 29, 1944 by troops of the 2nd Baltic Front of the Red Army as part of the Staraya-Russa-Novorschewer operation .
