history

Novosokolniki was created around 1900 in connection with the construction of a station on the Moscow – Windawa railway line .

The station and the associated settlement were named after the former town of Sokolniki , which was 10 kilometers away and belonged to the Vitebsk governorate . Nowosokolniki means New Sokolniki ; the road from Velikiye Luki to Sokolniki passed here. The name is derived from the Russian ( Slavic ) word sokol for falcon (see also city arms).

In 1925 the town was granted city rights.

During the Second World War , Novosokolniki was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on July 25, 1941 and recaptured on January 29, 1944 by troops of the 2nd Baltic Front of the Red Army as part of the Leningrad-Novgorod operation .
