The Lowat ( Russian Ловать ) is a 530 km long tributary of Lake Ilmen in the north-west of the European part of Russia and on a short section in Belarus .

course

The Lowat flows from the small lake Lowatez (Ловатец) about 30 kilometers southeast of the city of Newel , located at about 170  m altitude directly on the border between Russia and Belarus . In an approximately 40-kilometer arc, it first flows through several lakes in the far northeast of the Belarusian Wizebskaja Woblasz before it reaches the Russian Oblast Pskov again . The Lowat flows further in north to north-easterly directions, reaches the Novgorod Oblast and the Ilmen lowlands and finally flows into the south-eastern part of the Ilmen Lake, where, together with its tributaries Polist and Pola, it forms a 400 m² inland delta .

Hydrography

The catchment area of the Lowat covers 21,900 km². The mean monthly water flow at the middle reaches, at Cholm 193 kilometers above the mouth, 105 m³ / s with a maximum during the snowmelt.

The largest tributaries are the Naswa , Loknja , Redja and Polist from the left and Kunja from the right. The Pola touches the Lowat from the right a few kilometers from its mouth.

Above the delta of the estuary, the Lowat is about 300 meters wide and four meters deep; their flow velocity here is 0.2 m / s. The main arms of the river in the delta ( Kopanez , Lowat , Staraja Lowat , Baklan , Wergot ) are each between 60 and 160 meters wide.

The Lowat freezes between late November / early January and March / April.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Lowat is navigable in the lower reaches of about 70 kilometers to the village of Cherentschitsy , but is not used regularly today. In the Middle Ages, on the other hand, the trade route known as the “ route from the Varangians to the Greeks ” ran over the Lowat.

At Velikije Luki , the Lowat is crossed by the Moscow - Riga and Bologoje - Vitebsk railways and the M9 Moscow- Latvian border and on to Riga. The regional road R51 Nevel– Staraya Russa follows the river for long stretches until it leaves it in a westerly direction at the small town of Kholm . The lower reaches of the Lowat near Parfino, east of Staraya Russa, are crossed by the Bologoje – DnoPskow railway line.
