Dedowitschi ( Russian Дедовичи ) is an urban-type settlement in the Pskov Oblast ( Russia ) with 8,798 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located on the right bank of the Schelon , a tributary of Lake Ilmen , below the confluence of the left tributary Sudoma, about 100 kilometers as the crow flies east-southeast of the oblast capital Pskow .
Dedovichi is the administrative center of the Rajons Dedowitschski and only location of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Dedovichi.
history
The place was founded on September 11, 1901 during the construction of the railway line Saint Petersburg - Vitebsk as a station settlement in place of the churchyard Vysokoye and named after the nearest villages Bolshoi Dedowez and Maly Dedowez.
With the establishment of a Rajon in 1927, Dedowitschi became its center. During the Second World War , Dedowitschi, which was occupied by the German Wehrmacht at the end of July 1941 , was in the hands of Soviet partisans from February to September 1942 as the center of an area several thousand square kilometers . Dedowitschi was finally recaptured at the end of February 1944 as part of the Leningrad-Novgorod Operation by the 1st Shock Army of the Red Army , which faced the 16th Army of the Wehrmacht in the area of the settlement .
In 1967 urban-type settlement status was given.

economy
A few kilometers south of Dedowitschi is the Pskov thermal power plant (Pskovskaya GRES) . The natural gas powered power plant with an output of 430 megawatts was put into operation between 1993 and 1996 and is now part of OGK-2 . There are also forestry and wood processing industries, the food industry and a factory for plastic products in the village.
The settlement is located on the railway line Saint Petersburg - Novosokolniki - Vitebsk (route km 277 from Saint Petersburg Vitebsk train station ). From Dedowitschi there is a connection to the regional road R57, which runs past 12 km to the west, which leads from Porchow through the east of the oblast to the R58 between Novorschew and Beschanizy .
