Thomas Schadt (born January 31, 1957 in Nuremberg ) is a German director, producer, cameraman , author and photographer .

Life

After graduating from high school, Thomas Schadt trained as a photographer and then worked as a projectionist, camera assistant and theater photographer. From 1980 to 1983 he studied at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin and established himself as a documentary filmmaker for television. In 1983 he founded the film production company Odyssey-Film and has worked as a director, producer, photographer, cameraman and author ever since.

He has received numerous prizes for his work, including the Adolf Grimme Prize 1993 and 1999, the German Television Prize 1999, the German Documentary Film Prize 2005 and the Friedrich Baur Prize for Film and Media Art of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 2014.

In addition to his own film work, numerous teaching activities at film schools and universities followed from 1991 . In 2000 he was appointed professor for directing / documentary film at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy and has been its director since 2005.

From 2000 to 2004 he was a member of the jury for the First Steps young talent award and from 2004 to 2007 for the German Television Award . In addition, Thomas Schadt is co-initiator and co-supervisor of the SWR debut series “Young Documentary”.

From 2010 to 2011 he was managing director of the Academy for Performing Arts Baden-Württemberg .

In 2015/16 he was the artistic director of the Nibelungen Festival in Worms under the direction of Nico Hofmann .

Schadt has been a member of the European Film Academy , the German Film Academy since 2005 , the Berlin Academy of the Arts since 2013 and the German Academy of Performing Arts since 2017 .
