Christoph Hübner (* 1948 ) is a German filmmaker , author and producer .

Life

Hübner grew up in Heidelberg and Hamburg as the son of a church musician and an editor. He passed his Abitur in 1968 at the Johanneum in Hamburg. Then he studied law in Heidelberg and Munich, at the same time he was intensively involved with photography . In 1968 he met Gabriele Voss , with whom he has lived and worked ever since. From 1971 he studied at the University of Television and Film Munich, Dept. of Feature Films. The early college films received attention and were shown at various festivals such as Oberhausen, Hof and Mannheim. The documentary film "Huckinger March" (1973) was Hübner's first encounter with the Ruhr area. The next films were also made in the Ruhr area, including the four-and-a-half-hour film " Life story of the miner Alphons S. " (1978), for which Hübner (with Gabriele Voss and Alphons Stiller) received the 1980 Adolf Grimme Prize . In 1975 he received a professorship at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. In 1978 the company moved to the Ruhr area. There, Hübner founded the RuhrFilmZentrum together with Gabriele Voss, Werner Ruzicka, Theo Janßen, Günther Hörmann and others, which aims to achieve long-term and sustainable film work in the Ruhr area. He is also involved in regional film funding in North Rhine-Westphalia and was involved in the founding of the Filmbüros NW (1980) and the documentary film work group (1980).

From 1978 onwards, numerous, mostly documentary films were made for cinema and television. Many of the projects are film cycles or long-term projects. They accompany places and people over long periods of time, especially in the Ruhr area. Examples include “ Prosper / Ebel - Chronicle of a colliery and its settlement” (1979–1983, 1995–1998, 2018 ff.); “People in the Ruhr Area ” (1986–1988); " Emscher Sketches" (2006 to 2016); the soccer trilogy " The Champions", "Halftime" and "Nachspiel" (1998 to 2019).

Other focal points are Germany and German history. Often there are films about people whose history Hübner documents as chronicles of their time: life story of the miner Alphons S. (1978); AnnaZeitLand (1993), Thomas Harlan - Wandersplitter (2006); Estate (2017);

In addition, Hübner is always interested in art and artists and in reflecting on his own profession: Vincent van Gogh - The Way to Courrières (1989); Wagner Pictures (2002); Mandala (2012); Transmitting (2013) are examples of this. For 3sat , WDR and ZDF , Hübner developed the television format Documentary Works (1995–2012) , a series of 17 one-hour film encounters with fellow documentarians such as Klaus Wildenhahn , Jürgen Böttcher , Volker Koepp , Peter Nestler , Johan van der Keuken , Harun Farocki , Thomas Heise , Nikolaus Geyerhalter and others. It is about the documentary as an author's film.

In addition to the film work, Hübner published numerous texts on documentary film and its aesthetics. Lectureships, teaching positions and workshops took him through Europe, the USA, South America, South and Southeast Asia and Africa.

In 2004 he and Gabriele Voss received the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia for his general services to NRW film and his film work in the Ruhr area.

The films by Christoph Hübner and Gabriele Voss have been shown at numerous national and international festivals a. a. in Berlin, Mannheim, Leipzig, Duisburg, Munich, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Vienna, Linz, Paris, Lussas, London, Riga, Haifa, Montreal, Melbourne, Bombay, Shanghai and Beijing.

The Goethe-Institut presents its films worldwide as part of tours and workshops in London, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Salvador de Bahia, Dacca, New Delhi, Calcutta, Kathmandu, Hyderabad, Jakarta, Manila, Madras, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Accra, Lille, Toulouse, Tunis and Tblissi.

Hübner is a member of the German and European Film Academy.
