It is a biographical interview in eight parts by Alphons Stiller. In the film, the miner Alphons S. tells his life story, which is also contemporary history. It begins with the first memories of childhood in the Saarland, later in the Ruhr area. Alphons S. becomes an apprentice in mining, then works underground as a coal miner. In the years of the global economic crisis he became unemployed and moved through Germany as a " Tippelbruder ". Eventually he found work again as a reaper on the Mecklenburg estates until he was called up for military service as a construction soldier .
