Johan van der Keuken (1965)

Johan van der Keuken (born April 4, 1938 in Amsterdam ; † January 7, 2001 there ) was a Dutch documentary filmmaker and photographer.

Life

Van der Keuken studied from 1956 to 1958 in Paris at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC). As a director (and mostly also a cameraman) he made 55 films, including a four-hour portrait of his hometown ("Amsterdam Global Village"), but also two films about blind children ("Blind Kind" and "Herman Slobbe / Blind Kind II") and a portrait of the jazz musician Ben Webster, who last lived in the Netherlands . Many of his films have been produced for the Dutch public service broadcaster , mainly for VPRO , but also for the Dutch Ministry of Culture. His last film "De grote Vakantie" ("The Long Vacation") was made on the occasion of a trip to Bhutanafter his doctor told him he would only live a few more years due to cancer. This film is about the change of time and space through an illness, but also about the search for meaning and the hope for a big connection between all things.

He owed his reputation as an internationally outstanding documentary filmmaker to a complex montage technique. Since 1982 he has also given film concerts with the Willem Breuker Kollektief .
