Opland (actually Rob Wout, born July 18, 1928 in Amsterdam ; † July 19, 2001 there ) was a Dutch illustrator who became known for his political cartoons .

Life

Peace Movement in the Netherlands (1985)

Opland worked from 1947 for the political weekly De Groene Amsterdammer and a year later for the daily newspaper de Volkskrant . His drawings, in which he caricatured the political events of the Netherlands and the rest of the world, became a trademark of both papers, for which he worked until shortly before his death. Opland's ultimate rise to one of the most famous political cartoonists in the Netherlands happened in the late 1970s when he supported the peace movement with his drawings . The result was an image that was used worldwide, it is that of a woman kicking a nuclear missile away.
