Yrrah (born November 7, 1932 in Apeldoorn , † March 2, 1996 in Amsterdam ; real name Harry Lammertink ) was a Dutch cartoonist .

Life

Yrrah grew up as Harry Lammertink in Apeldoorn and moved to Amsterdam in 1951 . He worked as a draftsman and a short time later he made a name for himself as a cartoonist based on the American model. At the beginning of his career he worked for the newspaper Het Parool .

Yrrah used to draw the dark side of mankind; Infirmity , death and ruin were central themes for him. Maybe they were the result of poor health, which he had struggled with since childhood. He had a strong dislike for religion and fascism , but was downright obsessed with women . One of his drawings even occupied the Roman Catholic Party of the Netherlands (Rooms Katholieke Partij Nederland) in the cabinet. The drawing showed a pregnant nun running away from a statue of Christ .

His cartoons are characterized by a sharp punch line and a perspective with an always low angle . Yrrah sometimes produced more than 50 drawings a month, but often feared that one day he would run out of new ideas.

Yrrah published a. a. in the newspapers Het Parool and Vrij Nederland as well as in magazines such as Humo , Stern , Playboy and Esquire . In 1983 his book of evil pictures was published by Fischer-Verlag . In 2002 an exhibition of his works took place in the Kunsthal Rotterdam . In the same year a summary of his life and work was published under the title Zwart Bloed , edited by De Harmonie.

Yrrah's final resting place is in the Zorgvlied cemetery in Amsterdam. He left over 7,000 drawings.
