Visions du Réel is one of the most important international documentary film festivals . It takes place in Nyon in Switzerland and is the third largest film festival in the country and the largest in western Switzerland .

Originally founded in 1969, it has been held annually in April in its current form since 1995. In 2009, 40 years of “Documentaries in Nyon” and 15 years of Visions du Réel were celebrated.

history

In 1969 Moritz de Hadeln and his wife Erika de Hadeln founded the Nyon documentary film festival in Switzerland. Moritz de Hadeln was in charge of the festival until 1979 and Erika de Hadeln until 1994.

The film critic Jean Perret and his wife Gabriela Bussmann directed the festival from 1995 to 2010. They abolished the term documentary film in the festival program because it no longer does justice to today's diversity of forms in this genre and replaced it with the broader title Visions du Réel. In addition to the classic documentaries, other ways of expressing the cinema of reality are also represented at the film festival.

In 2010 - for the last time under the resigning festival management - over 160 films were shown. The Italian journalist and film critic Luciano Barisone has been running the festival since 2011 . He announced in August 2016 that he would be leaving after the 2017 edition.

In 2012, 110 films from 47 countries were shown. 25,000 paying guests were counted - 4,000 more than in the previous year. In 2016, 39,000 viewers were recorded.
