The Bertz + Fischer Verlag , based in Berlin-Kreuzberg was founded in 1996 by Dieter Bertz and Katrin Fischer and on books on the subjects of politics, culture, film and audio books specialize.
history
The focus of the publishing program was initially the film series, begun in 1997, with monographs on directors ( Tim Burton , Spike Lee , Alfred Hitchcock , Stanley Kubrick and others) and important actors ( Robert De Niro , Marlon Brando and others). Four of the volumes (on Quentin Tarantino , Joel & Ethan Coen , Martin Scorsese and Aki Kaurismäki ) were each named “best film book of the year” by epd Film magazine . In the Stars!portraits of contemporary cinema actors such as George Clooney , Johnny Depp , Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts appear . In 2004 the publishing house took over the entire film book segment of the Berlin Jovis publishing house.
In recent years the publisher has expanded the program in various directions: The Deep Focus series is designed for selected film studies, including books about Ida Lupino and Helmut Käutner . The media / culture series published by Marcus Stiglegger is cultural-scientific and interdisciplinary and is dedicated to film and television as well as other media such as games and the Internet. There is room for pointed, controversial essays, especially on popular culture, in the small-format series Culture & Criticism . And since 2007, Jochen Brunow and the Carl Mayer Society - supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media - have published the film and screenplay almanac Scenario at Bertz + Fischer Verlag. Political non-fiction books have been published since 2010 in the series Sexual Politics , Texts on Time , Capital & Crisis , Reality of Utopia and Politics Current . In the series Sexual Politics z. B. the nonfiction book Praise of the open relationship. About love, sex, reason and happiness by Oliver Schott .
Numerous publications are produced in cooperation with institutions from the film sector such as the Deutsche Kinemathek - Museum for Film and Television or the DEFA Foundation . For example, the publications of the Berlinale retrospective have been published by Bertz + Fischer Verlag since 2003 . Some of the long-standing cooperation partners include the television broadcaster arte , the International Symposium on Film in Bremen , the Federal Agency for Civic Education , the aforementioned DEFA Foundation, the German Film Academy , the Deutsche Kinemathek - Museum for Film and Television, the Documentary and Animated Film Festival Leipzig , the European Institute of Cinema in Karlsruhe, the Munich Film Festival , the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation , the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) and the Jewish Museum in Vienna .
The publishing house also launched its audio book segment in 2003 with “Jansens Kino”, an acoustic film story by Peter W. Jansen on 50 CDs. In 2006 the series "original + unabridged" followed, in which complete readings of classics of world literature appear in the original English. In 2008, “Get Shakespeare! Fast and Easy "and" Crime Wave "added further English-language audio book series.

The Weimar Cinema - Newly Seen catalog, edited by Karin Herbst-Meßlinger, Rainer Rother and Annika Schaefer , was awarded the 2018 Willy Haas Prize for an important international publication on German-language film.
The PROKLA magazine has been published by the publisher since March 2020 .
