Theater house

The Theaterhaus Stuttgart is a private theater and event location in the north of Stuttgart in the Feuerbach district near the Pragsattel. Every year over 300,000 visitors attend almost 1,000 events in the theater; around 150 of these dates are free of charge. This makes the theater house the best-attended theater of its kind in Germany. In addition to the performances of his two ensembles for dance ( Gauthier Dance / Dance Companie Theaterhaus Stuttgart) and Schauspiel (Internationales Theaterhaus Schauspielensemble), there are guest performances with artists from the fields of comedy, cabaret, pop and rock music, readings, jazz, classical and newcomers Music.

history

The non-profit association Theaterhaus Stuttgart eV was founded in 1984 by Werner and Gudrun Schretzmeier and Peter Grohmann in the Wangen district on the premises of an empty glass factory. The game began on March 29, 1985. The steadily growing range of cultural events and the associated increase in audience numbers was taken into account in 2003 by moving to the Rheinstahlhallen near Stuttgart's Pragsattel . For this purpose, the listed building was converted into a culture and sports center. The 12,500 m² area was most recently used by Thyssen as a distribution warehouse for sheet metal and structural steel.

The house offers a total capacity of almost 2000 seats in four event halls and additional rentable rooms. In addition to the event halls, the building houses rehearsal rooms, workshops, a restaurant, offices and a two-story foyer. The artistic program is also supplemented by a range of sports, for which a separate sports hall is available.

In 2007 Eric Gauthier founded the Compagnie Gauthier Dance . She premiered at the Theaterhaus in 2008 with Six Pack . Since then, Gauthier Dance has been the permanent company of Theaterhaus Stuttgart eV

structure

The non-profit theater house association is supported by almost 400 members (as of 2019). The general assembly elects the advisory board and the board, which in turn appoints the management. The board of directors can also appoint advisory board members. To support the so-called sponsoring association, there is the Förderverein Theaterhaus Stuttgart eV, whose statutory purpose is the comprehensive promotion of education, art and culture on the Pragsattel.

The Rheinstahlhallen area is maintained by the Theaterhaus Stuttgart Foundation, which rents land and buildings from the City of Stuttgart on a long-term, owner-like relationship. In addition to the Theaterhaus Stuttgart, the Musik der Jahrhundert eV association, the AGJF youth leisure center and the Baden-Württemberg State Youth Association are housed in the area. The three foundation bodies are the board of directors, the foundation council and the board of trustees.

financing

Since it was founded, the house has been dependent on a high level of self-financing . At present, the company's own income represents around 65 percent of the budget. The public funding is shared between the state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Stuttgart and currently makes up 35 percent of the annual budget.

The total budget for 2020 is around 10.5 million euros. In comparison, the Theaterhaus Stuttgart is one of the largest cultural centers of its kind in Europe and, with its daily programming, is “a novelty in the European cultural landscape”, according to a study of European cultural centers carried out in 2007.

In March 2019, the board of the association wrote to the city of Stuttgart that the house was threatened with bankruptcy . The reason is the loss of a sponsor and unexpectedly low income in the hot summer of 2018. A one-time grant of 600,000 euros is required to avert the bankruptcy. The city grant for the association planned for 2019 amounts to 1.7 million euros, plus a maintenance grant of 300,000 euros and support for Gauthier Dance of 337,500 euros. Their Festival Colors , which takes place every two years, is additionally funded with 175,000 euros annually.
