Life

Marc-André Dalbavie studied composition with Michel Philippot , musical analysis with Betsy Jolas and Claude Ballif , electroacoustics with Guy Reibel , orchestration with Marius Constant , musical computer science with Tristan Murail and conducting with Pierre Boulez in Paris . Between 1985 and 1990 he mainly worked at IRCAM . This was followed by a DAAD scholarship in Berlin between 1991 and 1992 and a stay at the Villa Medici in Rome in 1995 and 1996 . Since 1996 he has been professor of instrumentation at the Conservatoire de Paris .

Dalbavie is a representative of the école de musique spectrale , which deals with spectral music. On the occasion of the world premiere of his opera Charlotte Salomon at the Salzburg Festival in 2014, he described his tonal language as follows:

“It is a liberation, an expansion, you access harmonies of the past, the present and an unknown future. That's why I can integrate other music without distorting it. I switch between tonality , meta- and atonality . It's a lot of work. It would be much easier to only move within one system at a time. "
